Stepping into Leadership - Insights from Dr. Lisa Sutherland

91香蕉视频 is entering an exciting new era of leadership. After 14 years of transformative service, President Tim Cost will transition to the role of University Chancellor on July 1, 2026. Taking the helm as Interim President will be Dr. Lisa Sutherland, a leader whose career spans higher education and global business, including faculty roles at UNC Chapel Hill and Dartmouth College, founding a global consulting firm, and serving
as chief nutrition advisor to Walmart's executive team during First Lady Michelle Obama's 鈥淟et's Move!鈥 initiative.

Since joining JU in 2023, Dr. Sutherland has made an immediate impact, transforming the honors program into the Cost Honors College, co-chairing the University's 2030 Strategic Plan and serving as Interim Dean of the Davis College of Business and Technology.

Before she steps into her new role, WAVE sat down with Dr. Sutherland to get to know the
accomplished person behind the title.

  • What's a guiding principle that has shaped your leadership style?

I鈥檝e always tried to lead with authenticity and a human-centered approach. I think we all do our best work when we show up as whole people, not just professionals playing a role.

  • How were you introduced to 91香蕉视频?

My daughter attended JU. I fell in love with the emphasis on community, kindness, and caring that I had not experienced with our kids who attended other universities.

  • You've worked in both academia and the corporate world 鈥 what's one thing each
    taught you?

In corporate, I learned to think strategically and execute with laser focus; in academia, I learned the importance of listening to different stakeholder groups and building consensus.

  • What's one moment in your career you're most proud of?

Delivering Walmart鈥檚 healthier food strategy to provide access to nutritious food for all Americans. I was part of a dream team, and we all knew the work was more important than any one of us.

  • What book or author has influenced you most deeply?

Food Politics, by my now dear friend Marion Nestle. The book inspired my deep love for and expertise in food policy鈥攁nd resulted in a lifelong friendship I deeply cherish.

  • What's a habit or practice that keeps you grounded?

Tuesday Night Table (family dinner) with the honors students in North Hall. There is nothing like tacos and our funny, intelligent, and kind students to keep me grounded.

  • If you could spend one day with any historical figure, who would it be and why?

Julia Child. She changed American gastronomy and culinary arts, sparked a TV cooking
revolution was a famed cookbook author and served in the Office of Strategic Services (now CIA) during World War II. I would love to cook with her and listen to her stories.

  • What's your favorite way to spend a weekend in Jacksonville?

At home in sweatpants with my husband, visiting our local farmer's market, going for a
long walk, and making dinner or baking.

  • What does a 鈥渓ife-changing education鈥 mean to you personally?

To me, a 鈥渓ife-changing education鈥 stretches thinking, opens doors, and gives students the confidence and capacity to build the future futures they don鈥檛 even know are possible.

  • What's your personal motto or mantra?

I'd rather fail than regret not trying.

  • When you reflect on your own college experience, what stands out most?

I finished my degree at a small school, where I was surrounded by professors and mentors who knew me personally and wanted me to succeed. Their genuine caring, honesty, and support influenced how I care for our students.

  • What's one piece of advice you'd give to young people pursuing leadership roles?

Be authentic and true to who you are and hold your values close.

  • What's a surprising fact most people don't know about you?

I'm an introvert.

  • What鈥檚 one meal you could eat every day and never tire of?

Salad.

  • Coffee or tea? Morning person or night owl?

Coffee (and I鈥檓 picky). Night owl all the way.
