JU Professor Receives Four International Awards for Documentary on "Obelisk"

Most people only see the finished product: a striking sculpture rising up from a roundabout at 91香蕉视频鈥檚 main entrance. Professor Alex Willemin wanted to show what came before. His short film, Obelisk: A Love Letter to Arlington, documents the global collaboration behind the public artwork.

The film earned four prestigious 2025 Telly Awards in an international competition drawing over 13,000 entries from all 50 U.S. states and six continents. Founded in 1979, the Telly Awards annually showcase the best work created within television and across video, for all screens.

Designed by San Francisco artist Shan Shan Sheng and fabricated in Germany, the Obelisk stands at the heart of Arlington Avenue's signature roundabout on JU鈥檚 campus. Through extended filming at Peters Studio in Germany and on-site on campus, Willemin and his student film crew captured the global collaboration, craftsmanship and vision behind the piece.

The Obelisk at JU's roundabout main gate entrance.鈥淢ost people don't see the planning, craft, collaboration and effort that goes toward creating art 鈥 they only see the finished product,鈥 Willemin reflected. He added that the footage from Germany 鈥減robably separated my work in the documentary from other submissions this year.鈥

JU President Tim Cost praised the film. 鈥淭his documentary captures the essence of the Obelisk 鈥 a symbol grounded in the community鈥檚 rich history and reaching upward with vision and purpose. We are immensely proud of Professor Willemin and his students in the film program for capturing the creativity and spirit of the Obelisk.鈥 Willemin, in turn, thanked the University and his students for their role in the project, saying that the recognition is 鈥渆xhilarating鈥 and that he looks forward to continuing to create with his students.

As both an art and academic showcase, Willemin鈥檚 project is not just a love letter to the neighborhood that JU calls home but a tribute to the university's commitment to creative inquiry and global engagement.
