Minors in Mathematics

Applied Mathematics

An applied mathematics minor helps you acquire the mathematical tools and understanding to tackle problems in almost any field by prioritizing a breadth of mathematical techniques.  It pairs especially well with science and technical majors, but it also puts an analytical, problem-solving twist on any major.

Requirements:

  • MATH 240 Calculus III 4 hours
  • MATH 320 Linear Algebra 3 hours
  • MATH 331 Differential Equations 3 hours
  • MATH 3xx At least 3 additional credit hours in math courses numbered above 300
  • MATH xxx Additional 5 credit hours in mathematics courses

Total: 18 hours

Data Science

Data Science is quickly growing and adding a minor in data science will help you tackle the big data questions that are emerging in your field, whatever it is.  You'll gain practical, hands-on data experience, preparing you to explore and interpret the vast quantities of data that are becoming available everywhere.

Requirements:

  • MATH 270 Intro to Data Science (3 credits)
  • MATH 316 Applied Statistics (3 credits)
  • MATH 320 Linear Algebra (3 credits)

Choose two (2):

  • MATH 420 Linear Algebra II (3 credits)
  • MATH 470 Machine Learning Algorithms (3 credits)
  • MATH 475 Models & Simulation for Data Science (3 credits)

Choose one (1):

  • CS 160 Application Development II (4 credits)
  • CS 170 Intro to Scientific & Engineering Programming (3 credits)

Total: 18-19 hours

Mathematics

A minor in mathematics gives you both a mathematical toolset and an understanding of what makes them true.  Delving into proof writing and advances mathematics polishes reasoning, writing, and analytical skills.  A mathematics minor can help you stand out from the crowd as you apply to graduate school, jobs, or law school.

Requirements:

  • MATH 240 Calculus III 4 hours
  • MATH 301WI Introduction to Abstract Mathematics 3 hours
  • MATH 3xx At least 6 additional credit hours in math courses numbered above 300
  • MATH xxx Additional 5 credit hours in mathematics courses
