When should I make a tutoring appointment?

Students should sign up to meet with a tutor if they need assistance. Tutoring is not just for students who are struggling in a course; if you have a question about course content, how to complete a homework problem, how to stay organized, how to best prepare for an exam, etc. you can benefit from meeting with a tutor.


Is tutoring available for every course?

We try to make tutoring available for as many courses as possible, but there are some limitations.  At the present time we do not offer tutoring for graduate level courses (numbered 500 and above). 

 

Do I need to make an appointment or can I just show up?

You need to make an appointment at   Appointments may be available with short notice, but it is always best to plan ahead.

 

How far in advance can I make an appointment?

You can schedule an appointment up to the end of the semester in advance or even just a few minutes before the time you want, based on tutor availability.

What should I bring to my tutoring session?

You should always have your notes, textbook, homework, and/or any questions that you have about your course to your session. This will help you and your tutor make the most of your session--whether in person or virtual.

What should I do prior to meeting with a tutor to ensure I get the most out of the session?

To make the most of any tutoring session, you should do the following:

  • Attend class
  • Take notes during class
  • Read assigned material
  • Try homework problems
  • Bring relevant material and questions

What should I expect to do/to happen during a tutoring session?

You and your tutor will meet one on one to work on your questions. You should expect to actively participate in the session by:

  • Asking questions for clarification
  • Taking notes to refer to later
  • Answer questions the tutor may ask
  • Demonstrate knowledge of what you’ve covered with your tutor during the session

Please Note: Tutors will not assist with graded assignments or take-home exams.


How long is a tutoring session?

All tutoring sessions can last up to 50 minutes. However, you are not required to stay the full time if you only have a few questions or finish early.

What options are available to online students?

All undergraduate students enrolled in an online course have access to virtual tutoring offered by the Knack peer tutors.

Is there a charge for tutoring?

No, tutoring is a service provided to all currently-enrolled JU undergraduate students.

Where is tutoring located?

All of our peer tutoring takes place in the Academic Support Center, on the 3rd floor of Swisher Library. We are also offering virtual tutoring, which takes place on the Knack platform. Group tutoring may take place in alternative locations.

Who are the ASC tutors?

All tutors at the Academic Support Center are JU undergraduate and graduate students. They have all been recommended by JU faculty, have participated in extensive training aligned with College Reading and Learning Association standards, and must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA.

Does the ASC have an academic integrity policy?

All students involved in a tutoring session (both the tutor and the tutee) are expected to abide by all policies outlined in the 91Ï㽶ÊÓƵ Academic Integrity & Misconduct Policy, as well as the Green Pages Code of Conduct. Any behavior that violates these policies may result in no longer being able to utilize tutoring at the Academic Support Center. In particular, any student who offers to pay an ASC tutor to complete an assignment, test, and/or course for that student, will prohibited from attending tutoring sessions for the remainder of that semester, and possibly the entire academic year.
