FIRST CALL
The 91Ï㽶ÊÓƵ Media Board announces applications for leadership positions in student media.
Applications are being accepted for scholarship positions with 91Ï㽶ÊÓƵ Student Media. A scholarship funded by the Media Board is NOT a paid hourly wage or a salaried position. The scholarship provides an opportunity to a qualified individual to advance his or her learning in a practical setting on specific media industry-related skills, by working well in cooperation with others, and to develop more broadly as a person in the areas of management and leadership. The job description associated with each scholarship, whether elected or appointed, must be accomplished in all of its aspects for the full term of the appointment, regardless of the amount of time and effort that is personally required to fulfill the position's clearly designated responsibilities. Clarification of duties should be sought from the media's faculty advisor.
Qualifications
Applicants must have earned a minimum of 28 credits at 91Ï㽶ÊÓƵ; not be on academic probation or disciplinary probation, be a full-time undergraduate student and have a 2.25 grade point average.
Applications may be completed online or obtained from the Administrative Assistant for the Division of Humanities, in the Council Building. Completed applications are due Monday, February 21st by midnight. Applicants will be notified of the interview date and time by the media advisor.
Open Positions
The Aquarian
Advisor: Prof. Murphy, C-110
Editor ($1,500)
The Editor is responsible for knowing and complying with the By-Laws and the University Guidelines for Student Media.
Job Description
The position requires leadership skills to direct the editorial team in the selection, design, and layout stages of publication and to see the work through to distribution of the magazine. The Editor should be able to negotiate with printers and observe the contract carefully; he/she should work amicably with the faculty advisor. The Aquarian Editor should be able to:
- Draft a budget that itemizes all intended expenditures to present to the Media Board; accounting for and not exceeding the budget for the project.
- Recruit a staff to share all aspects of the publication process including publicizing the Aquarian, receiving entries, evaluating the literary and artistic submissions, setting deadlines for publication, preparing the copy for the printer, distributing the Aquarian to students, notifying students whose work was accepted for publication and arranging for the presentation occasion.
In selecting an Editor for the Aquarian, preference will be given to applicants with some publication experience and a record of participation in creative writing or arts.

Dolphin Radio
The Manager and Program Director are responsible for knowing and complying with the By-Laws and the University Guidelines for Student Media.
Station Director ($5,000)
Job Description
The station manager leads the team of students who operate the radio station. This Individual works closely with the faculty advisor to set goals for the station, formulate the budget, and track expenses, and is generally expected to do whatever it takes to keep the station running smoothly, which includes recruiting, selecting, motivating, and supervising the volunteer staff. Although this scholarship is awarded for leadership abilities and general involvement with the station rather than a specific amount of daily work, the station manager should expect to put in an average of well more than ten hours per week. Candidates already involved with the station will be given special consideration, but anyone familiar with the radio industry and / or radio equipment will be considered.
Program Director ($3,000)
Job Description
The program director works with the station manager to maintain quality programming and to direct daily operations. This includes selecting the music playlists, maintaining the automation system, producing talk shows, and keeping a record of everything that is aired, as well as training, scheduling, motivating, and supervising voice trackers and disc jockeys. Although this scholarship is awarded for leadership abilities and general involvement with the station rather than a specific amount of daily work, the station manager should expect to put in an average of well more than ten hours per week. Candidates should be familiar with the genre of music that JU108 plays, and those already involved with the station or who are familiar with radio equipment and / or the radio industry will be given special consideration.
Marketing/Business Director ($2,000)
Job Description
The marketing/business director is responsible for the promotion of the station and sale of advertising sponsorships. This individual will work closely with the Station Director, the Program Director, the Webmaster ad the Production Manager to produce sponsorship announcements. The marketing/business director will also plan and implement events and activities that promote Dolphin Radio/JU108; plan and implement public relations efforts and work with the Station Director to formulate the budget and track income and expenses.
Webmaster ($2,000)
Job Description
The webmaster works closely with the program director and the production manager to keep all information on the website up to date, helping out in other areas as is reasonable. Although this scholarship is awarded for technical expertise and general involvement with the station rather than a specific amount of daily work, the webmaster should expect to put in an average of well more than four hours per week. Candidates should have a background in web design, and familiarity with the station’s music, procedures, and equipment is also preferred.
Production Manager ($1,000)
Job Description
The production manager ensures the content of the spots made by the weather producer, the bar & nightclub promotion producer, the local events scriptwriter, the campus events & free food scriptwriter, and those making public service announcements, training, motivating, scheduling, and supervising these volunteers as needed; the production manager is also expected to work with student clubs and university officials to make special spots that the program director will then air throughout the semester. Although this scholarship is awarded for leadership abilities and general involvement with the station rather than a specific amount of daily work, the production manager should expect to put in an average of well more than three hours per week and should also be available for special projects for extra pay (to be negotiated with whatever university divisions or departments are involved). Candidates who are familiar with radio equipment or have experience in production will be given special consideration.
Engineer ($1,000)
Job Description
The station engineer provides technical support for all the station’s equipment, performing a weekly inventory, being on call with an accessible schedule, and helping out in other areas as is reasonable. Although this scholarship is awarded for technical expertise and general involvement with the station rather than a specific amount of daily work, the station engineer should expect to put in an average of well more than three hours per week. Candidates who are already involved with the station will be given special consideration, and previous experience in technical support is preferred.
Dolphin TV

The Station Manager and Executive Producer are responsible for knowing and complying with the By-Laws and the University Guidelines for Student Media.
Station Manager ($6,000)
The station manager works closely with the faculty advisor to ensure the mission and vision of the Dolphin Channel News. The station manager coordinates the daily operation of the television laboratory along with the production and delivery of the twice a month student broadcast. The station manager is responsible for scheduling and monitoring student members of the staff in the daily operations of the lab. The station manager communicates daily and directly with the faculty advisor. The station manger is expected to actively participate in the Broadcast Showcase, the College Media Advisor/College Broadcasters Incorporated Conference, and the Associated Press Seminars and Awards. To qualify for this competitive position, students must have successfully completed two of the four broadcasting classes and have previously and successfully served as a staff member on The Dolphin Channel News.
Executive Producer ($4,000)
The executive producer works closely with the station manager and the faculty advisor to assist in the daily operations of the television laboratory, the production and delivery of the student broadcast. The executive producer works with the faculty advisor to maintain the station website and social media outlets. The executive producer is expected to participate in the Broadcast Showcase , the College Media Advisor/College Broadcasters Incorporated Conference, and the Associated Press Seminars and Awards.
To qualify for this competitive position, students must have successfully completed two of the four broadcast classes.
The Navigator
Advisor: Dr. Moberg, C-102
The Editor is responsible for knowing and complying with the By-Laws and the University Guidelines for Student Media.
Editor ($6,000)
Job Description
The Editor is responsible for stimulating active engagement in campus and community life and acting with an informed awareness of campus issues. The editorship requires a person who is capable of coordinating 15-20 people working in small groups on various aspects of advertising, production, reporting and photography and producing a weekly publication on deadline over two semesters. Planning the size of each issue while overseeing the layout, headline writing and editing on Macs is required. Some knowledge of media law and ethics is vitally important but guidance in these areas is available to a highly motivated candidate who is willing to seek advice from other students, faculty members, and the faculty advisor.
Business Manager ($4,000)
Job Description
The Business Manager is responsible for the financial operations and advertising activities of the student newspaper, including working closely with the Editor on budget reports, planning issues and scheduling ads. This is a leadership position that involves giving oral presentations and conducting persuasive interviews. The Business Manager represents The Navigator to various clients from advertising agencies to local businesses and classified ads. Electronic bookkeeping skills are required. In order to be selected the candidate must be able to talk to people both internal and external to the university in a business-like and professional manner. The Business Manager will be required to fulfill the terms of ad contracts, keep a detailed log of contacts and follow-ups with clients, and review these activity logs and budget statements with the faculty advisor at least twice each semester.
Riparian

The Editors are responsible for knowing and complying with the By-Laws and the University Guidelines for Student Media.
Editor ($4,000)
Job Description
The duties of the Riparian Editor include:
- Supervise the work of all staff members including the Business Manager.
- Work with the printing company in all matters of yearbook publication and meet all deadlines in a timely manner.
- Create a yearbook that meets acceptable journalistic standards of accuracy, thematic unity, balance, and artistic value.
- Recruit editors and staff members and train the staff in the fundamentals of yearbook production.
- Assign and edit copy, design pages, supervise photography and oversee other aspects of production.
- Take overall responsibility of the appearance and content of the yearbook.
- Demonstrate skills and knowledge of desktop publishing, journalism/magazine, yearbook style and publication production.
Design Editor ($2,000)
Job Description
The duties of the Design Editor include:
- Work with design team to develop a template for the book and decide how the photos will be organized and displayed
- Assign sections to the design team, set deadlines for completion
- Ensure team is on task and high quality is maintained
- Work with photographers to ensure they are shooting photos in the volume, size and quantity that fit the format of the book
- Edit, clean photos to assist photographers if needed
- Take overall responsibility of the appearance and content of the yearbook.
- Demonstrate skills and knowledge of desktop publishing, journalism/magazine, yearbook style and publication production.
Photo Editor ($2,000)
Job Description
The duties of the Photo Editor include:
- Work with Business Manager to gather dates and times of events photographers need to cover.
- Help photographers manage their photos and ensure they are edited and loaded onto the server and organized correctly.
- Ensure all photos chosen for the book are high-res, good quality and professional.
- Stay in touch with designers to ensure their needs are being met as far as composition, quality and quantity of photos is concerned
- Demonstrate skills and knowledge of photography, photo editing software and publication production.
Business Manager ($2,000)
Job Description
- Business manager is responsible for keeping the team on time and on task.
- Must have strong organization skill and be able to communicate well with other team members
- Work closely with the printing company to determine specifications of book, deadlines, prices and production information.
- Put together timelines / organize deadlines for the team
- Gather dates and times each week of new events photographers need to cover and work with photo editor to ensure assignments are made and kept
- Follow up with photographers / designers throughout the week to ensure they are on task with their assignments.
