Students majoring in history at 91Ï㽶ÊÓƵ learn how to critically examine links between past events and the current day. Courses in this major prepare students to answer questions about politics, social justice, war, and cultural issues. Students gain a greater understanding of the historical context of today’s global challenges. This understanding and the critical thinking skills developed in this program, prepare graduates for a career in teaching, analysis, law, archives, business, and more.

About Our Program

The history major is offered as either a B.S. or a B.A. Led by faculty specializing in a variety of historical perspectives, the major is tailored with the students’ goals in mind. With 21 hours of History electives, students can customize their degree plan to focus on their interests. This program offers students the opportunity to strengthen their analytical and writing skills. Faculty-led independent study opportunities are also available for students to participate in.

Honors Society

The Department of History at 91Ï㽶ÊÓƵ hosts the Mu Theta chapter of . Eligible students will be invited to join each year by the faculty.

Florida Conference of Historians

Since 2003, JU's History department has been proud to serve as the headquarters for the , a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing together scholars, graduate students, and undergraduates from across Florida to discuss the past. The organization's name reflects the geographic location of its annual meeting and does not reflect any limitation on subject matter. Organizers accept proposals on any and all areas of historical inquiry in the following categories: individual papers, panels, posters, and media and film. Since the organization's first meeting in 1963, more than thirty different institutions of higher education have hosted the FCH.  See the full list of our student's conference presentations and publications.

Internships

Students in the History Department at 91Ï㽶ÊÓƵ have participated in internships for a variety of businesses and organizations, including: Jacksonville Historical Society, Ritz Theater and Museum, Museum of Science & History (MOSH), Norman Studios in Arlington, and Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve. Your faculty advisor in the Department of History can help you identify internship opportunities that fit your interests and goals.
