Language Requirement

 

The Global Studies Requirement at 91Ï㽶ÊÓƵ can be fulfilled by taking world language through the 102 level. A Bachelor of Arts degree requires world language through 202. Students are strongly encouraged to begin their language study in their first year and to take their required courses in consecutive semesters.

Admissions Requirement: As of Fall 2019, all entering freshman must have two years of high school foreign language or college level courses up to the 102 level, which can be taken at JU in the first year of enrollment

Placement Exam

All students with French or Spanish in high school should take the placement exam to ensure that they begin at the correct level.  

Course Sequence

In French, the beginning language course sequence includes a three-course introductory sequence (101-102-201) followed by a single intermediate-level course (202). Students are assessed using proficiency levels as established by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). .


FREN101 - Beginning French I

This course is designed for true beginners. Students will work towards Novice Mid proficiency. At the end of FREN101, students will be able to introduce themselves, list activities they like to do, and describe their families and friends.

FREN102 - Beginning French II

This course picks up where FREN101 leaves off. Students will work towards Novice High proficiency. At the end of FREN102, students will be able to order food, talk about their favorite holiday, and describe their home.

FREN102 completes the global studies requirements for all degrees except the B.A.

FREN201 - Intermediate French I

In this course students will work towards Intermediate Low proficiency in speaking, reading, writing, and listening. Students complete the entire beginning level sequence in FREN201, preparing them to transition to content work in FREN202.

FREN202 - Intermediate French II

This course represents the gateway to the minor. Students will continue to work towards Intermediate Low proficiency, using Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's classic novella, Le Petit Prince, as our textbook. Upon completion of 202, students will complete the requirements for a B.A. (where applicable) and have finished 40% of the requirements for the French minor.
